Cathy's post at 9:13 p.m. was all meaningless slogans. Given that the CRCP is proposing meaningful changes, Harold Wilson should be proud of us.
Cathy, is that all you have? Meaningless slogans, the usual buzzwords (progress, moving forward, smart growth)?
Again, shame on the city for going against the concerns of the people who already live here. Where is the bill of rights that John mentioned earlier?

Cathy, we seem to have a different notion of progress. You say that progress is "working towards better development." It seems to you progress is just more buildings and roads, quantity not quality. To me progress is moving towards greater harmony between man and nature and between man and community. Laying down more concrete is actually regress as it move us away from this goal.

One the one hand, I've been pointing out that we need to get back to the topic of this thread. On the other hand, Cathy's interpretation of the definition of "progress" warrants comment. They are working towards better development to accomodate growth in the best ways possible. There are many people at work who have made this their goal, and many ideas being circulated of how it may be done. Leaving the city the way it is with no chance of a future could be done easily enough by capping the population. As it is, I have more faith in the city than that. This is not "status quo" at all, but rather careful progress which must be worked for. It is the harder route, but the one which shows the most potential for the city. The status quo is supporting the continued unsustainable growth we are experiencing, continuing to line the pockets of developers while ordinary citizens pay the price, further threats to the health of our citizens, further erosion of their quality of life, and thus ensuring that we have "no chance of a future" that has any meaning. What's the point if, as has been clearly demonstrated already, we are following along the same path as every other crowded, congested, polluted city in this world? That's not progress, that's stagnation and callous disregard for the people who live here. That's not the harder route, that's capitulation to the greedy growth polluters of this world. A population cap; coupled with careful redevelopment (walkable communities and so on), air quality initiatives, alternative transportation education (that really works), comprehensive programs to help the needy, real action on low cost housing, and a host of other initiatives we've already discussed -- that's true progress. That's progress towards improving the real quality of life for the people who live in this city, and creating a vibrant and workable community. Quality, not quantity (and, based upon our history, we can't have both). So, Cathy, after all that, what do you see as the goal of "progress?" The fundamental question is "why?" It's time to really get down to your philosophy and examine your assumptions. I've made mine clear, now it's your turn.

So that this thread can get back to the topic at hand, I suggest, Cathy, that if you are going to respond to my last post, you do so in the "Smart Growth in Kelowna" thread. That's not exactly the right place, but it'll do.
Perhaps we need a "philosophy of growth" thread, but we seem to be having that discussion throughout this forum anyway.
Thanks.
