There have been editorials and letters to the editor of late complaining about the waits at the KGH and that it is understaffed. Actually, it isn't so much that the KGH is understaffed as it is that Kelowna is growing too fast for medical and other services in the city to keep up with the growth!

Well that is exactly why they want to construct a medical clinic in Westbank that may help alieveate some of the pressure off KGH. This new clinic will help with minory injuries, like broken bones, so that they wouldn't have to go into Kelowna.

More reports recently of overcrowding at the KGH. The Daily Courier reported on Dec. 3, 2005 that "as many as 20 patients newly admitted to the 330 bed Kelowna General Hospital must lie on gurneys in the hallway waiting for a ward bed to open up." Is this all happening because the hospital is shrinking? No, it's happening because Kelowna is growing too rapidly and the health infrastructure can't keep up. Growth comes with benefits and costs. The benefits are usually reaped by wealthy developers and businessmen and the costs are borne by everyone else.

Rapid area population growth has again been implicated in overcrowding at the Kelowna General Hospital as there are a lack of hospital beds to accommodate the large number of incoming emergency patients. The Daily Courier quotes hospital administrator Rick Riley saying "Its's a major challenge because our population in the Central Okanagan has grown by 6,000 in the last two years." The Courier reports that "Doctors have said they wouldn't be surprised if someone dies in the waiting room."

On March 24, 2006 CHBC television reported that Kelowna General Hospital administrator Rick Riley said that there wouldn't be a meaninful resolution to the current bed shortage at the KGH for 2 to 3 years. This means that you or I if admitted to the hospital through the emergency department could find ourselves on a bed in the hallway of the hospital for hours or even days for some period to come. In the meanwhile our city is rolling out the red carpet for more newcomers who because of their numbers will be sure to aggravate the problem. The Kelowna Official Visitors' Guide for 2006 is called "Kelowna: Ripe with Surprises." The bed crisis at the hospital will be a surpise to newcomers all right, and not a pleasant one.
