Herman Daly has been an important thinker in the area of how to make our society sustainable. Daly has advocated the stabilization of global population and resource consumption and moving towards a "steady-state economy," the aim of which is qualitative rather than quantitative growth. Here is an article which offers a summary of Daly's thinking on this subject: www.npg.org/forum_series/steadystate.html

Herman Daly is certainly not alone in his thinking, and in criticizing classical economists for failing to internalize environmental and social costs. Thomas Homer-Dixon takes up the same theme in his recent newsletter and in a New York Times opinion piece, pointing out that the 1990's were a bit of a hiatus, but now www.homerdixon.com/articles/20061129-nytimes-endofingenuity.html
