Penticton city council recently passed a bylaw allowing for taller highrises that would allow developers to exceed current density restrictions. Mayor Jake Kimberley commented something to the effect that he doesn't want development to occur on the hillsides, so it has to go somewhere. He has obviously never considered just halting population growth altogether, but then that might cost him the vote of the Chamber of Commerce. Councillor Joanne Grimaldi said that taller highrises just amount to "selling a little air space." And I thought that only members of Kelowna city council said stupid things like that.
Kelowna is presently in the lead as the worst planned Okanagan city but it is becoming increasingly apparent that Penticton is jealous of Kelowna having that designation and is very eager to take that title for itself.

Yes, vertical sprawl, more crowding, congestion, traffic, pressures on infrastructure, and higher taxes -- anything so that developers can continue to make a profit.
It all sounds so appealing when compared with the alternative of halting growth, preserving greenspace and aesthetics, improving the quality of life, and other such frivolities.

I'm not sure that this is a bad thing for Penticton.....but should it matter to you or me, anyways??? Neither you, John, Rick, or myself live in Penticton, so would it not make sense that we allow the people who LIVE there to come to their own conclusions. or do we not live in a democracy?

By the same logic, should it matter to you what John or I think anyways? You are not John or I, so would it not make sense that we allow the people who ARE to come to their own conclusions? Do we not live in a democracy?

It makes sense, democratically, that I am concerned. One key componenent embraced by democracies is the factor of self-determination.....therefore, it is cause for concern anytime one tries to determine the actions of those in another political region. My question simply is, shouldn't the people in Penticton be free to make their own decisions about how they develop???

Why?
And if your response is the same circular "because this is a democracy," then why shouldn't I just use your same logic again?
After all, as someone said, "One key componenent embraced by democracies is the factor of self-determination."

Rick and I aren't trying to "determine the actions" of Penticton, dmgr, we are merely commenting on what they are doing there. Freedom of speech is part of democracy, isn't it, or would you try to deny us that freedom? You can write all the letters to the editor you want telling the media and others to ignore us but you will not quash our freedom of speech on this forum.
