Mayor Sharon Shepherd called it correctly when she said she was feeling “grumpy” over the recent Westside governance vote (“Shepherd doesn’t want Westside swiping West Kelowna name,” Daily Courier, June 21). With Shepherd and her council having received a slap from Westside voters, she is now feeling nasty and vindictive saying that she would oppose the Westside using the word “Kelowna” in any part of their new name.
And the slap that the mayor got was well deserved as she has proven to be a big disappointment since her election 17 months ago. Despite promises of bringing about change and setting the city on a course towards sustainability, there has been no meaningful change from the policies of the previous council and Shepherd’s notion of sustainability is just the band-aid solution of dressing up uncontrolled development with environmentally-friendly building techniques.
In addition, there is Shepherd’s pledge of increased public participation having turned into Kelowna residents not getting to vote on either Westside amalgamation or the Mission Aquatic Centre and the mayor’s abandonment of the Simpson Covenant. Westside residents should be able to call their new city anything that they want, but I wouldn’t blame them at all if they wanted to disassociate themselves as much as possible from the broken promises that have marred Sharon Shepherd’s term as mayor to date.
