Newly-elected Mayor Sharon Shepherd has come under criticism both within Council and outside for the creation of new city task forces and committees. The opposition is coming from unabashedly pro-development councillors Blanleil and Letnick and from pro-development media types such as John Harding. Shepherd was elected on a platform that included improving public participation in planning and it is fitting and proper that these committees be created as she has the electoral mandate to do this. The pro-development forces against her are merely interested in seeing that development is speeded along and that there aren't any more impediments to it and don't care much about public involvement.
