On August 7, 2005 the Daily Courier featured an article entitled "Traffic, roadwork boost crash claims." The article is about how factors such as increased traffic on our already congested roadways have resulted in an increase in traffic accidents. "The result is a flood of claims at ICBC claim centres in the region's three major cities, said Kevin Irvine regional co-ordinator of road safety. 'According to the Kelowna claim centre manager, June was a very busy month. He definitely saw a big increase in crashes and claims. He said July was also up, but not as bad,' said Irvine."

There's a letter to the editor in the Aug. 18, 2005 issue of the Daily Courier from a Vancouver resident who had just returned from a visit to Kelowna. It states "We were absolutely shocked by the congestion in the city, at the bridge and at the lack of planning on the city's behalf to deal with the growth that you are experiencing. ... We also met someone over the weekend who was up for the weekend from Vancouver, who has recently moved from Kelowna as they could no longer deal with the traffic. .. I think you have some work to do to deal with this insane growth, and lack of infrastructure in place to deal with it. It will only get worse over time. Unfortunately, we aren't moving up there anythime soon after this visit. The charm it once had has been lost and I don't think it'll ever be back again."
Well, those comments pretty well say it all. Yet our city council keeps approving residential permits as quickly as developers apply for them, thereby inviting even more traffic congestion. Do these myopic people deserve three more years in office?
