The Kelowna Daily Courier on July 5, 2005 has an article about efforts in progress to improve the lighting in dark downtown alleys in order to make them safer. Twenty-nine high-powered wall lights have recently been installed "to discourage drug dealers and trespassers from using the alleys at night." The Downtown Kelowna Association hopes business owners will install another 20-25 lights by the fall and is offering business owners 50 percent rebates worth up to $350 for each light.
"Meanwhile, the association is negotiating with city coucil to remove garbage dumpsters on public right-of-ways throughout downtown. The goal is to elminate hiding places and temporary shelters for transients."
There are many ways to improve the safety of the downtown without highrise megaprojects.
