At the June 20th meeting of Kelowna City Council, Councillor Ron Cannan said he had received several calls from residents expressing that the community needs to redefine its vision of the waterfront. As the Downtown Plan has not been revised since 1998, Cannan suggested the creation of a committee to revise and update the plan especially in regards to the waterfront. Planning staff was directed to come back to council with a report outlining the parameters by which such a committee could be created.
Earlier at the meeting Cannan asked if city council could place a referendum on the ballot for the November election. He was told that the deadline for a council decision on the matter would be August 5. Was Ron perhaps hinting at a referendum on Lawson Landing? I think that would be an excellent idea! It about time for some real public participation in planning in this city instead of back room deals being made between city council and developers.
