Interior Health has announced it will open a needle exchange and first aid office on Leon Avenue by the middle of July just two doors west of the Kelowna Drop-In Centre on Leon Ave. Merchants on Leon Ave. and elsewhere downtown are hopping mad as they were expecting that this area would be cleaned up with the city telling the public that the Gospel Mission will be moved. But it seems like this was the last straw for at least one business, Temptation Tatoos, that said it will be leaving the area.
Interviewed on CHBC television Mayor Walter Gray said he was surprised by the move and that Interior Health should have consulted the neighbouring businesses on Leon before arranging for the location. Gray said the zoning in the area does not prohibit them from locating there. However, he should have been up on their plans and applied some "moral suasion" to encourage them to locate elsewhere. Once again, Walter Gray has dropped the ball. Who's in charge here, anyway? The November 16 civic election can't come soon enough for me. And he's thinking of running for another term? Fat chance.

To me it makes sense to locate the needle exchange where the people are that need it! It would not make a lot of sense to have the needle exchange far away in the North End, Mission or whereever if the intraveneous drug users are doen town. The first aid station will help to estatblish contact with people who would otherwise never see a nurse. In the long run it will keep costs down. A little prevention will go a long way. I am even advocating for a safe injection site!
